Contents
Fluticasone propionate
Indications/Uses
Reduces symptoms of asthma in patients previously treated w/ bronchodilator alone or w/ other prophylactic therapy. Prophylactic management of mild, moderate & severe asthma in adults. Any child who requires to control asthma symptoms, including patients not controlled on currently available prophylactic medication.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >16 yr 100-1,000 mcg twice daily. Mild asthma 100-250 mcg twice daily. Moderate asthma 250-500 mcg twice daily. Severe asthma 500-1,000 mcg twice daily. Childn ≥4 yr 50-100 mcg twice daily, 1-4 yr 100 mcg twice daily, administered via a paed spacer device w/ a face mask.
Special Precautions
Reassess patient's therapy plan in case of deterioration of asthma control. Possible development of pneumonia in patients w/ COPD. Possible systemic effects include Cushing's syndrome, Cushingoid features, adrenal suppression, growth retardation in childn & adolescents, decreased bone mineral density, cataract, glaucoma, & central serous chorioretinopathy. Monitor height of childn receiving prolonged treatment. Regularly monitor adrenocortical function in patients transferring from oral steroid therapy. Replacement of systemic w/ inhaled therapy may unmask allergies previously controlled by systemic drug. Do not stop treatment abruptly. Consider very rare reports of increases in blood glucose levels when prescribing to patients w/ history of DM. Active or quiescent pulmonary TB. Avoid concomitant use w/ ritonavir. Immediately discontinue treatment in case of paradoxical bronchospasm. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Mouth & throat candidiasis. Pneumonia (in COPD patients); hoarseness; contusions.
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma conc w/ ritonavir. Potential for increased systemic exposure w/ potent CYP450 3A4 inhibitors eg, ketoconazole.
